Nigeria: Union calls for nationwide strike over removal of fuel subsidies June 7
Nigeria Labour Congress calls for nationwide strike in Nigeria over removal of fuel subsidies June 7. Related protests possible.
Event
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called for a nationwide strike on June 7 over the government’s plans to remove fuel subsidies in the near term. The measure, announced by President-elect Bola Tinubu during his inauguration on May 29, caused fuel shortages and price hikes across the country. The union issued a seven-day ultimatum on May 31 to demand a return to old prices before engaging in dialogue with the government. It is unclear how many employees may adhere to the work stoppage; the NLC is a prominent union.
Unless averted, the action may cause disruptions to transport and government services, business operations, healthcare, and other sectors; airport operations may also be impacted. Related protests are possible, particularly in urban centers such as Abuja and Lagos near fuel-linked companies, government buildings, and NCL offices. Clashes with security forces remain possible if striking participants are overly disruptive and security forces attempt to disperse.
Advice
Confirm all appointments and travel plans, including flights, for June 7; allow extra time to reach destinations and make alternative travel arrangements where necessary. Avoid all demonstrations as a routine security precaution and to mitigate associated disruptions. Leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Heed instructions from security services.
