Pakistan: Gas supply suspended to fuel stations and industries in Balochistan and Sindh Provinces from June 15 due to shortages amid cyclone threat
Natural gas shortages affecting southern Pakistan from June 15. Transport, commercial disruptions likely; power outages, protests possible.
Event
Indefinite natural gas supply suspensions are affecting Balochistan and Sindh provinces of Pakistan from 07:00 June 15. The state-run Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) has suspended natural gas supply to industries and filling stations due to shortages exacerbated by a cyclone threat. Officials will redirect supply to non-industrial power generation; nonetheless, power outages affecting both domestic and industrial users are likely in the coming days. Residents of urban centers such as Hyderabad, Karachi, and Quetta may demonstrate against prolonged power and/or gas outages; large protests typically cause localized traffic disruptions.
Transport disruptions are likely due to reduced supply at compressed natural gas (CNG) stations, especially across Sindh Province. Commercial disruptions are probable and may worsen if significant cuts to industrial gas supply are prolonged over the coming weeks. Earlier shortages have sparked protests from civilian, political, and trade bodies; popular demonstration venues include public squares, transport hubs, gas and power corporation offices, and press clubs. Security personnel will likely deploy to monitor large protests; clashes between demonstrators and security forces are possible.
Advice
Confirm alternative power supply, deliveries, and ground transport reservations in advance during the shortage due to possible disruptions. Source alternative fuel supplies if operations are heavily dependent on natural gas or state-provided electricity. Avoid all protests due to the possibility of violence. If clashes break out nearby, leave the area immediately, and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Heed all security personnel advice.
