Unionized workers plan to protest in Seoul and Sejong, South Korea, through June 20. Increased security likely.

Informational

Event

Unionized workers from the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) and Federation of Korean Trade Unions (FKTU) plan to protest in Seoul and Sejong cities through June 20. Participants intend to denounce the privatization of the public sector and demand a restructuring of the performance-based evaluation system. In the capital Seoul, workers will gather outside the President's office in Yongsan District, Constitutional Court, and National Assembly through June 19. Additionally, workers will protest at the Ministry of Strategy and Finance in Sejong Government Complex in Sejong June 20; around 2,500 people will participate in the action. Organizers did not specify start times for the events.

Authorities will likely increase security at any protest site and its surrounding areas. Additional demonstrations may occur at other popular gathering sites in the cities, including public squares. Localized transport and business disruptions are possible, especially if activists occupy nearby roads. While violence is unlikely, clashes between police and protesters remain possible.

Advice

Avoid the protests as a precaution. Plan for possible ground transport disruptions in the affected areas. Seek updated information on roads in the area and allow additional time to reach nearby destinations.
