South Sudan: Hepatitis E outbreak reported in Wau, Western Bahr el-Ghazal State, through May /update 1

Event

International health officials have declared an outbreak of hepatitis E virus in Wau, Western Bahr el-Ghazal State, with an additional 56 cases reported April 13-May 8, bringing the total case count for this outbreak to 147 cases. The majority of cases have been reported in Nazareth Village. South Sudan’s Ministry of Health and the WHO have deployed a rapid response team to determine the extent of the outbreak, and to implement preventative measures to reduce further disease transmission. This report represents the most complete data available as of June 1.

Context

Hepatitis E is transmitted directly through food or water contaminated with fecal material from an infected person. Symptoms typically develop 2-9 weeks after exposure. Symptoms include fever, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dark urine, joint pain, and jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes). Most infected individuals recover on their own, but some may require hospitalization in cases of severe illness.
