Sweden: Unionized workers at Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Malmo airports to strike on multiple days July 3-14
Unionized workers at Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Malmo airports in Sweden to strike on multiple days July 3-14. Disruptions likely.
Event
The Swedish Transport Workers' Union has called on affiliated security staff to strike on multiple days July 3-14 onward over working conditions. The union will reportedly block new hiring of security staff, including temporary personnel, and overtime at Stockholm Arlanda (ARN), Bromma Stockholm (BMA), Gothenburg Landvetter (GOT), and Malmo (MMX) airports. Security staff and airport controllers at BMA and GOT will also launch a work stoppage 03:00-23:59 July 3. The union has called for additional strikes at both airports July 7, 10, and 14 if there is no progress in talks with the relevant parties. Security staff at Stockholm's Arlanda Airport (ARN) may also join the work stoppage 19:00 July 5-19:00 July 6, and possibly on July 12-13. Striking workers may hold protests at the airports during the work stoppage.
Unless averted, the action will likely disrupt airport operations and flight schedules, including possible delays and cancelations at the affected airports. Long queues are likely for passenger processing procedures. Lingering disruptions are also likely following the conclusion of the strike as the airport deals with passenger backlogs and airlines reposition aircraft and crew.
Advice
Confirm flights if booked to fly via ARN, BMA, GOT, and MMX July 3-14. Do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed. Arrive early at the airport to allow additional time for processing.
