Ukraine: Disruptions due to flooding ongoing in Kherson region, following destruction of Kakhovka dam, June 6
Disruptions due to flooding ongoing in Kherson region, Ukraine, June 6, following destruction of Kakhova dam. Evacuations ongoing.
Event
Disruptions due to flooding are ongoing in the Kherson region on June 6 following the destruction of the Kakhova dam. Russian forces allegedly destroyed the dam. Local authorities reported that the following settlements had been evacuated: Tiahinka, Lvove, Odradokamianka, Ivanivka, Mykilske, Tokarivka, Poniativka, Bilozerka, and the Ostriv district. There are no reports of casualties. Authorities could issue additional evacuation orders for flood-prone communities over the coming days. Disruptions to electricity and telecommunications services are possible where significant flooding or landslides impact utility networks.
The flooding is impacting areas in the operational contact zone between Russian and Ukrainian forces. Damage to bridges, rail networks, and roads is therefore supplementary to existing severe conflict-related disruptions. The Kakhova dam provided hydroelectric power to the region, and the reservoir supplied cooling water to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. The destruction of the dam and reservoir will likely impact electricity generation.
Advice
Monitor local media for weather updates and related advisories. Confirm all transport reservations and business appointments before travel. Make allowances for localized travel delays and potential supply chain disruptions where flooding is forecast. Do not drive on flooded roads. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged electricity outages.
