Unionized education workers to hold strike across Uruguay and related protest march in Montevideo June 21; disruptions likely near march.

Warning

Event

Unionized education workers affiliated with the Coordinating Committee of Uruguayan Education Unions (Coordinadora de Sindicatos de Educacion de Uruguay, CSEU) plan to hold a 24-hour nationwide strike June 21 to demand a larger budget for the country's education system as well as greater government accountability vis-a-vis education policy.

In addition to the nationwide strike, demonstrators plan to hold a march in downtown Montevideo starting at 10:00. Participants intend to gather at Universidad de la Republica (UDELAR) on Avenida 18 de Julio and then march to the Torre Ejecutiva, the main office building of the Presidency of Uruguay. Thousands are likely to participate in the march.

Transport and business disruptions are likely along the march route June 21. Authorities will likely deploy heightened security along the march route, near government buildings in Montevideo, and to the sites of any other protests that materialize.

Advice

Avoid all protests as a precaution. Allow additional time to reach your destination if operating in Montevideo June 21; consider taking alternative routes to circumvent the march route and any related disruptions. Heed instructions from authorities.
