US: Abortion rights activists to stage rallies in cities across country June 24

Abortion rights activists to stage rallies in cities across US June 24 to commemorate anniversary of Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade.

Informational

Event

Abortion rights activists affiliated with numerous organizations, including the Women's March, plan to hold demonstrations in several cities throughout the US on June 24. While the stated aims of the rallies slightly vary, activists have generally organized the demonstrations to demand legal access to abortion and commemorate the first anniversary of the Supreme Court's Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization decision, which overturned the 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling that legalized access to abortion nationwide.

A major demonstration is scheduled to take place in Washington, DC, where activists plan to gather at Columbus Circle, outside Union Station, starting at 12:00 and from there march to the Supreme Court building.

Activists have also announced that demonstrations will take place at the following places and times:

  • Atlanta: March on the Ponce de Leon Belt Line, 14:00

  • Chicago: Rally outside the Dirksen Federal Building, 10:00

  • Dallas: Rally at the Main Street Garden Park, 17:30

  • New York: Rally at Columbus Circle, 14:00

  • Philadelphia: Rally at Franklin Square, 10:00

  • Phoenix: Rally at the Arizona State Capitol, 12:00

Related demonstrations will likely materialize in other cities. Anti-abortion activists have organized a counterdemonstration starting at 10:30 at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC; other counterdemonstrations are likely in locations across the country. Hundreds of people are likely to participate in most of the rallies.

Heightened security is likely in locations subject to demonstrations, especially in areas near government buildings. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely. Skirmishes between opposing groups cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations as a precaution. Allow additional time to reach your destination if operating in areas impacted by rallies; consider taking alternative routes to circumvent any related disruptions. Heed authorities' instructions.
