A magnitude-5.8 earthquake occurred in eastern Antofagasta Region at around 20:31 CLT July 5. The epicenter was about 194 km (121 miles) southeast of Calama . The tremor occurred at a depth of about 132 km (82 miles), and light shaking was likely felt throughout most of Antofagasta Region in Chile and western Jujuy and western Salta provinces in Argentina. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake, and significant damage is unlikely. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Light aftershocks are likely over the coming days.
