Unionized teachers affiliated with the Teachers' Union of Chile (Colegio de Profesores de Chile) launched a 24-hour nationwide strike on July 26 over a series of demands, including improved salaries for active and retired teachers and improved security inside schools. Strike participants have also launched an associated protest march in downtown Santiago from Plaza Baquedano along Avenida Libertador Bernardo O'Higgins ( La Alameda). Additional strikes and protests are scheduled for Aug. 2-3 if authorities do not respond to the teachers' demands.

Thousands will likely participate in the demonstration prompting transport disruptions in downtown Santiago through late July 26.
