Colombia: Military veterans to demonstrate in several locations nationwide July 19
Military veterans to stage anti-government protests in multiple locations across Colombia July 19. Increased security likely.
Event
Members of the Foro Ampliado de Reserva Organizada (FARO), a coalition of military veterans' groups, as well as political opposition activists, plan to demonstrate in several cities across Colombia on July 19. The purpose of the action is to protest what veterans assert are governmental policies that are damaging to the military.
The main protest will occur in Bogota at Plaza de Bolivar starting at 11:00, with related rallies taking place at the following locations and start times:
Barranquilla: Plaza de la Paz, 09:00
Bucaramanga: Plaza Civica Luis Carlos Galan, 11:00
Cali: Plaza San Francisco, 10:00
Cartagena: Portal de los Dulces, 16:00
Cucuta: Parque Santander, 11:00
Medellin: Parque de las Luces, 10:00
Participation will probably vary significantly by location, with the event in Bogota drawing the largest number of demonstrators. Heightened security and transport disruptions are likely near the announced protest locations. Counter-protests cannot be ruled out.
Advice
Avoid all protests as a precaution. Allow additional time to reach destinations in areas where demonstrations are taking place. Heed the instructions of authorities.
