Guinea: Additional anti-load shedding demonstrations likely in Conakry through at least late July following protest July 25

Further protests likely in Conakry, Guniea, through late July, following anti-load shedding demonstrations July 25; road disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Further protests are likely over the coming days in Conakry through at least late July following an anti-load shedding demonstration on July 25. Reports indicate a spontaneous protest unfolded in Ratoma's Taouyah district; while residents blocked roadways, security forces intervened to disperse the protesters. A previous demonstration near Matoto-Kondebounyi along the Fidel Castro highway caused traffic disruptions and clashes between demonstrators and police forces on July 24. The utility provider National Electricity of Guinea (EDG) announced planned daily maintenance work in Matoto from July 25 to July 29. Officials did not immediately disclose when electricity will be restored.

Authorities will likely maintain a heightened security posture in Conakry over the coming days. Localized ground travel disruptions are likely near any protest that may occur. The potential for clashes with security forces is possible amid continued disruptions in electricity supply.

Advice

Avoid any demonstration as a precaution—plan for possible localized transport and business disruptions. If any violence erupts nearby, immediately depart the area and seek shelter at a safe nongovernmental building. Heed all official traffic and security advisories.
