India: Farmer group calls for rallies in five cities in Punjab State July 6
Farmers to protest near five market committee offices in Punjab, India, 11:30 July 6. Increased security, some localized disruptions likely.
Event
Unionized farmers under the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) plan to rally outside state-managed market committee offices in five urban centers of Punjab State, from 11:30 July 6. Affected locations are Amritsar, Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar, Jagraon, Kapurthala, and Nawanshahr. Organizers are denouncing the state and central governments for failing to provide the demanded minimum support prices for some crops. A few hundred participants may join each event. Significant disruptions are unlikely.
Police will likely monitor gatherings and may attempt to prevent or control especially large and/or disruptive crowds. Skirmishes between demonstrators and police may occur. Temporary road closures and/or traffic diversions may affect roadways near rally sites.
Advice
Avoid protests due to possible violence. Do not navigate roadblocks as a precaution. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately for a secure, nongovernmental building. Allow additional travel time near the rally. Confirm transport reservations and road status in the affected area. Heed all security and traffic advisories.
