Opposition protest possible across Kenya July 12 despite authorities announced demonstration ban. Increased security likely.

Warning

Event

Protests are possible nationwide on July 12 despite Kenyan authorities announcing a demonstration ban on July 11. The purpose of the prohibition is to prevent violence and the destruction of property that has allegedly occurred in previous opposition Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya Coalition (Azimio) gatherings. The decision comes in response to the opposition's call for protest at Nairobi's Kamukunji Ground and throughout the country. Police have announced their intention to disperse any demonstrations that occur, although it remains uncertain whether the organizers will comply with the ban.

Security forces are expected to be deployed in Nairobi and other locations to ensure compliance with the ban. Clashes between demonstrators and the police as possible, especially if opposition leaders continue with the demonstrations against authorities' orders. Additionally, areas affected by protests and heightened security measures may experience transportation disruptions.

Context

Azimio's protests are a continuation of previous demonstrations to denounce the passage of the Finance Bill 2023 by the Members of the National Assembly and the government's failure to lower the cost of living that occurred on June 27 and July 7. The Bill imposes new taxes and raises existing levies on products and services, including a 1.5 percent mandatory housing fund contribution.

Advice

Avoid all protests or large gatherings due to the risk of associated violence, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Plan for delays near gathering areas. If violence occurs nearby, leave the area immediately and seek shelter in a safe, nongovernmental building.
