Mexico: Activists plan to march in downtown Mexico City July 26

Activists plan to march in downtown Mexico City, Mexico, from 16:00 July 26. Heightened security and disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Activists plan to march in downtown Mexico City on July 26. Participants will gather at the Angel de la Independencia from 16:00 and march to the Hemiciclo a Juarez. The purpose of the action is to denounce the 2014 mass kidnapping of 43 students in Ayotzinapa, Guerrero State. Participants, including family members of the students kidnapped, will demand greater transparency and justice against those responsible for the kidnapping. It is unclear how many people the march will attract.

Authorities will almost certainly deploy an increased police presence near gatherings as a precaution. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out, especially if authorities attempt to disperse crowds forcibly.

Advice

Avoid the demonstration as a precaution. If violence occurs, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a secure nongovernmental building. Seek alternative routes to circumvent related transport disruptions and allow additional time to reach destinations. Do not attempt to navigate around protester-erected roadblocks; allow police to dismantle them before proceeding. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
