An active shooter situation that began in the Britomart area of Auckland's Central Business District (CBD) at about 07:20 July 20 has ended as of 09:40. According to police, the incident was first reported on Quay Street before the gunman moved to a building under construction on lower Queen Street. At least two persons were killed in the shooting, with reports of six others being wounded; it is unclear whether the two fatalities include the perpetrator, who authorities have confirmed is also deceased. Investigators have as yet released no statement concerning a possible motive for the attack; however, police have assured the public that the shooting was an isolated incident and does not pose a national security risk.

Police cordons remain in place, and authorities continue to advise the public to avoid the lower Queen Street area as they complete their investigation. Officials have closed multiple roads in connection with the incident, including parts of Lower Hobson Street, Quay Street, Queen Street, Customs Street West, Customs Street East, and Lower Albert Street. Additionally, authorities have imposed detours for buses that operate in the city and closed the downtown ferry terminal.

Lingering transport and business disruptions are likely in the CBD until investigators complete their work and vacate the area.
