Nigeria: Doctors begin indefinite nationwide strike July 26

Unionoised doctors begin indefinite nationwide strike July 26. Healthcare disruptions possible.

Informational

Event

Doctors affiliated with the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) began an indefinite nationwide strike on July 26 over several grievances, including salary policies and lack of personnel. The action follows a similar work stoppage on May 17-22 after the government failed to meet their demands. It is unclear how many employees may adhere to the work stoppage; the NARD represents about 40 percent of Nigerian doctors.

The action may cause disruptions to healthcare services. Related gatherings cannot be ruled out possible near hospitals, medical facilities, and government buildings, including in Abuja and Lagos.

Advice

Confirm all medical appointments as a precaution until the strike concludes. Avoid all protests.
