Authorities ease 24-hour curfew in Mangu LGA, Plateau State, Nigeria, as of July 11, following renewed violence. Curfew applies 19:00-06:00

Warning

Event

Plateau State officials have eased a 24-hour curfew in the Mangu Local Government Area (LGA) as of July 11, following renewed violence that left at least a dozen people killed and properties damaged. The curfew initially imposed on July 9 now applies from 19:00-06:00 until further notice. Officials have stated that movement restrictions are in effect, except for security forces and personnel conducting essential duties. The relaxation of the curfew follows a meeting between local officials and main stakeholders based in Mangu.

Authorities will likely maintain an increased security presence to ensure adherence to the curfew; associated localized transport and commercial disruptions are likely. Locals opposed to the measure may stage protests. Further communal violence cannot be ruled out.

Context

Similar curfews have previously been imposed in parts of Mangu, including in May after assailants killed at least 38 people. The governor announced on June 19 that about 150 people died within three weeks in Mangu. The exact reason for the violence is unclear. Disputes over access to resources, land rights issues, and related communal tensions are frequent in the middle belt and have likely prompted violence. Communal violence often fuels rounds of reprisal attacks between various communities leading to heavy casualty tolls.

Advice

Consider deferring nonessential travel to the Mangu LGA until the situation calms. Abide by the curfew and remain courteous and cooperative if approached and questioned by security personnel. Plan for movement and business disruptions. Avoid all demonstrations. Maintain contact with your diplomatic representation.
