Pakistan: Additional clashes likely to occur in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province through at least mid-July following recent violence
Further clashes likely in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, Pakistan, through at least mid-July following recent violence. Exercise caution.
Event
Additional clashes are likely to occur in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province through at least mid-July following several incidents of violence between tribal communities over a land dispute in Kurram District. In recent days, violent clashes have left at least nine people killed and 50 others wounded in several parts of Kurram District and have spread to Peshawar's Chamkani region and other areas. Related demonstrations of varying types have also occurred elsewhere, including in Peshawar. Reports indicate shortages of essential commodities, such as fuel and medicine, are occurring in some affected areas due to road blockades. Certain educational facilities have also reportedly shut down.
Although organizers did not immediately disclose plans for such gatherings, several activist groups may stage additional rallies over the coming days. Demonstrators typically hold sit-in demonstrations, street marches, and disruptive roadblocks. Potential gathering sites include residences of local politicians, as well as prominent government buildings, press clubs, public squares, and thoroughfares.
Authorities will maintain a heightened security posture in the affected areas. Associated localized transport and business disruptions are likely. Officials may implement enhanced restrictions, including temporary telecommunication and movement curbs, as a precaution and/or if significant violence occurs. Police may conduct mass arrests and use force, including rubber bullets, live ammunition, batons, and tear gas, to disperse any protests that materialize. Minor bombings, acts of intimidation, attacks, arson, and vandalism targeting rival groups, security personnel, politicians, and government buildings cannot be ruled out.
Context
Significant clashes first broke out around July 6 when Bohshera and Dandar tribal community members exchanged fire over a land dispute in Kurram District. While various ceasefire agreements were reached in several parts of the affected district, repeated violations have exacerbated the ongoing strife. On July 10, the UK government issued an updated travel advisory, which advises its citizens against traveling to most parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province; it remained immediately unclear if the advisory was directly revised in response to the ongoing clashes in the province.
Advice

Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Confirm business appointments, transport reservations, deliveries, and road status. Do not check out of accommodation before confirming onward travel. Carry proper identification documents to present at security checks. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
