Pakistan: Heightened security likely near election commission office in Islamabad July 25 for former Prime Minister Imran Khan's appearance
Tight security likely near election commission office, Islamabad, Pakistan, July 25, for high-profile case. Protests and clashes possible.
Event
Officials are almost certain to heighten security around the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) office in Islamabad July 25 for the appearance of Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) leader and former Prime Minister Imran Khan. Khan has announced he will attend the hearing related to a contempt case, while authorities have directed police to produce him at the ECP office under a non-bailable arrest warrant otherwise. Hearings related to his other cases are also scheduled at the Islamabad High Court July 25. Section 144 remains active across Islamabad; the rules ban unauthorized public gatherings of more than four people and the carrying and use of firearms in public, among others. PTI supporters may defy any such restrictions to attend and/or hold solidarity rallies. Violence may quickly break out, mainly if police attempt to prevent PTI supporters from gathering or Khan is arrested.
Traffic restrictions, including road closures and diversions, are likely in the vicinity of the ECP. Such curbs may also affect sensitive areas like the Red Zone, as well as entry points to Islamabad, in case of violent or disruptive protests. Additional measures, such as vehicular and pedestrian checks, as well as limits on mobile internet services, are possible. Popular protest venues include public parks, government buildings like the parliament, and major roadways. Clashes and/or tight security measures may prompt further localized transport and/or business disruptions.
Advice
Avoid any protests or navigating protest roadblocks due to possible violence. Exercise caution if operating in or near any government and court buildings in Islamabad. Leave the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Plan for possible localized business and transport disruptions. Carry proper identification documents to present at security checks. Monitor trusted local media for protest plans, as organizers may not announce them in advance. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
