Informational

Event

Increased security is likely in Tomboronkoto, Kedougou Region, over the coming days following clashes between residents and security forces early July 21. Clashes erupted in opposition to the activities of a private mining company in the area. Police employed tear gas to disperse protesters and detained at least a dozen people.

Authorities will almost certainly deploy very tight security around any additional demonstrations that materialize; additional clashes cannot be ruled out. Localized transport disruptions are possible if further unrest occurs, including along National Route 7 which runs through the area.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations and heed the instructions of local authorities. Keep away from areas where crowds appear to be forming, or security personnel are deploying. If clashes erupt nearby, exit the area immediately; if unable to do so, take refuge in a secure non-governmental building.
