South Korea: Labor union calls for general strike nationwide through July 15 /update 1
Labor union calls for general strike across South Korea through July 15. Protests planned in major cities. Business disruptions possible.
Event
The Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) has called for a nationwide general strike through July 15 to protest President Yoon Seok-yeol's proposed labor reform measures and demand his resignation. Organizers claim that around 400,000 to 500,000 workers will participate in the action. The Korean Metal Workers' Union is a KCTU member and will join the strike July 12, potentially impacting operations at car manufacturers and other heavy industrial plants nationwide. Although South Korean law requires workers to maintain essential public services, government service and public transport disruptions are possible.
Related protests are likely in Seoul and other major cities during the labor action. KCTU has called for candlelight vigils nationwide July 4, 7, 11, and 14. Workers are also planning large-scale rallies in Busan, Daegu, Gwangju, Jeju, and Seoul July 5, with the possibility of gatherings near major industrial zones. In the capital Seoul, workers have called for demonstrations outside Sungnyemun July 6 and in Yeouido July 8 but have yet to specify the start times for these events. Health and medical workers are also intending to rally in Seoul July 13. Potential gathering locations in Seoul include Gwanghwamun Square, the National Assembly, Seoul Plaza, Sungnyemun, and Yeouido.
Increased security is likely near government buildings and other potential rally sites. Demonstrations will probably remain peaceful, but minor clashes between police and workers are possible. Localized transport disruptions could occur near any protest venue.
Advice
Avoid all demonstrations due to the potential for clashes. As organizers may not announce protest sites in advance, use caution near popular gathering sites and monitor local media for updates. Allow additional traveling time near rally sites, especially in central Seoul. Plan for potential business disruptions July 3-15; confirm appointments and time-sensitive shipments.
