Asiana Airlines pilots plan to begin indefinite strike across South Korea from July 24. Flight disruptions reported. Protests possible.

Informational

Event

Unionized Asiana Airlines (OZ) pilots will begin an indefinite strike across South Korea from July 24 following failed wage negotiations with Asiana Airlines officials. Ahead of the strike, the pilots began a work-to-rule protest June 7, prompting at least one international flight cancellation, eight domestic flight cancellations, 35 international delays, and 19 domestic delays, as of July 17. The union claims that the work stoppage will primarily affect passenger and cargo routes to the Americas and Europe. Due to domestic laws on strikes by essential service workers, Asiana Airlines will likely maintain over 80 percent of personnel working during strikes for international flights, 70 percent for Jeju routes, and 50 percent for domestic routes. Workers may withdraw the strike call at short notice if further negotiations with Asiana Airlines officials succeed.

Flight disruptions are likely and shipping delays are possible in the lead up to and during the strike. Strike-related protests are possible, mainly near airports and airline offices, as well as public squares. Hundreds of people may attend each event. Authorities could deploy increased security near any rallies that may materialize. Localized business and transport disruptions are possible at related gatherings. Minor skirmishes with security personnel cannot be ruled out, especially if demonstrators attempt to forcibly enter airports.

Advice

Confirm flight schedules and deliveries throughout the action. Do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed. Use alternative shipping methods for time-sensitive consignments, if necessary. Exercise caution around any protests that materialize. Allow additional travel time to and from airports, and any known demonstration venues. Plan for processing delays at airports.
