Informational

Event

Medical workers, including nurses and other healthcare professionals, affiliated with the Korean Health and Medical Workers' Union are continuing their strike in South Korea as of July 18. Although organizers officially ended the strike July 14, approximately 17 hospitals, three of which are in Seoul, still have 5,000 medical workers on strike. Participants are calling for better wages and working conditions. Emergency and intensive care services will remain available during the work stoppage. The strike could extend over the coming days if the government does not address the demands of healthcare workers.

Medical service disruptions are possible at affected hospitals during the strike. Striking workers may hold demonstrations outside hospitals, union offices, or government buildings, like the president's office and National Assembly, mainly in and around Seoul. Hundreds of people could participate in related demonstrations. Heightened security is likely, including the deployment of additional personnel, at gathering sites. Localized transport and business disruptions could occur near any protest venue. While any rallies will likely be peaceful, skirmishes between demonstrators and security personnel remain possible.

Advice

Plan accordingly for medical services disruptions and confirm medical appointments. If possible, contact healthcare facilities in advance for information about wait times, which could vary among hospitals and clinics. Avoid protests as a precaution. Plan for possible localized transport disruptions near rally sites.
