Warning

Event

Pro-democracy activists plan to demonstrate in Bangkok July 21 to denounce parliament's rejection of the renomination of opposition Move Forward Progressive Party's (MFP) leader, Pita Limjaroenrat, for the prime minister position. Organizers are also calling for the legalization of same-sex marriage and abolishment of the lese-majeste law. Participants will gather at the main auditorium at Kasetsart University from 17:00 and outside the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre from 19:00. Several thousand people may participate in the demonstrations.

Authorities will likely enact increased security measures, including deploying personnel, at Bangkok Art and Culture Centre and Kasetsart University July 21. Localized transport and business disruptions could occur near the gathering sites, especially if activists occupy nearby streets. Clashes between protesters and security personnel are possible. Police could disperse demonstrators if they attempt to bypass security barriers. Mass arrests may occur if security forces consider the action to violate lese majeste laws that ban alleged insults against the monarchy, or public gathering permit requirements.

Advice

Avoid the protest sites due to possible clashes. If violence occurs nearby, immediately depart the area and seek shelter at a safe nongovernmental building. Plan for possible localized transport disruptions. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
