Heavy rainfall forecast across parts of eastern Canada through at least Aug. 31. Flooding and associated disruptions possible.

Heavy rainfall is forecast across parts of southern and central New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island provinces and Newfoundland Island through at least Aug. 31. Embedded thunderstorms may accompany the heavy showers. As of late Aug. 29, Environment Canada has issued red rainfall warnings (the highest level on a three-tier scale) across Nova Scotia Province and southwestern Newfoundland Island; rainfall of 10 cm (4 inches) are forecast, with localized higher amounts possible. Special weather statements for heavy rainfall are in place across the rest of the affected area. Rainfall of 5 cm (2 inches) are likely in these areas. Officials could update and possibly extend the coverage of weather alerts over the coming hours.
Sustained heavy rainfall could trigger flooding in low-lying areas and landslides on unstable slopes. The severe weather could contribute to transport disruptions throughout the region. Floodwaters and debris flows may render some bridges, rail networks, or roadways impassable, impacting overland travel in and around affected areas. Ponding on road surfaces could cause hazardous driving conditions on regional highways. Authorities could temporarily close some low-lying routes that become inundated by floodwaters.
Severe weather may trigger flight delays and cancellations at airports across the affected region. Flooding could block regional rail lines; freight and passenger train delays and cancellations are possible in areas with heavy rainfall and potential track inundation.
