Unionized teachers launch indefinite nationwide strike in Chile Aug. 29. Protests likely.

Warning

Event

Teachers represented by the Union of Teachers of Chile (Colegio de Profesores y Profesoras de Chile, CPC) have launched an indefinite nationwide strike Aug. 29. The purpose of the work stoppage is to press several demands, including improved benefits for retired teachers, investments in schools, and improved security in educational settings. CPC leaders expect about 100,000 educators to take part in the strike, affecting over 5,000 schools nationwide.

Participating educators will also stage a number of demonstrations over the course of the labor action, especially in Santiago. Demonstrators gathered in Plaza de la Constitucion in front of Palacio de la Moneda (presidential office building) early Aug. 29. Further rallies are planned for Aug. 30, as is a major march for Aug. 31, although organizers have as yet released no details concerning specific locations or start times. Small pickets are also possible near public schools

Transport and business disruptions are likely near any demonstrations that may materialize, especially near government offices in Santiago and Valparaiso.

Advice

Avoid all protests as a precaution. Allow additional time to reach destinations near likely demonstration locations for the duration of the strike. Plan accordingly for increased absenteeism among employees who are parents or guardians of school-aged children.
