Colombian authorities will likely maintain an increased security posture near Argelia, Cauca Department, over the coming hours after armed clashes between members of a dissident group of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia, FARC) and Colombian military personnel killed at least 12 militants and one soldier July 31. The clashes took place in a region with extensive drug-trafficking activity, a major source of funding for dissident FARC groups.
A heightened security presence is likely in the coming days as the Colombian military carries out further operations. Localized transport and business disruptions are also likely. Additional clashes between the security forces and armed groups cannot be ruled out.
Argelia is approximately 70 km (43 miles) west southwest of Popayan.
