Colombia: Transport disruptions likely to persist in Valle del Cauca and Cauca departments as protesters continue to block Pan-American Highway Aug. 2

Traffic disruptions likely in Colombia's Valle del Cauca and Cauca departments as roadblocks remain along Pan-American Highway as of Aug. 2.

Warning

Event

Significant transport disruptions will likely persist in Colombia's Valle del Cauca and Cauca departments over the coming days due to protests by indigenous activists along the Pan-American Highway that had continued as of Aug. 2. Demonstrators are demanding government action to improve access to land and housing.

Protest participants have set up roadblocks along the Pan-American Highway and other major roads in Cauca Department. The main roadblock in the department is located near the town of Tunia, where several trucks are blocking the route that connects Cali and Popayan. Other protests have been reported on the Pan-American Highway in the town of Piendamo, as well as along Highway 31 in Caloto.

The demonstrations will probably also cause business disruptions as multiple commercial trucks are unable to complete their routes in southern Colombia. Clashes between demonstrators and police, as well as between demonstrators and counterprotesters, are possible for the duration of the protest activity.

Advice

Avoid all protests and associated roadblocks. Do not attempt to navigate around roadblocks; instead, seek alternative routes or wait for police to dismantle them. Plan for transport delays if operating between Cali and Popayan. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
