The Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) is observing a shutdown strike in Chittoor District, Andhra Pradesh, Aug. 5. The action is in response to and to denounce violence involving its supporters and members of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) on Aug. 4. Violence occurred in several locations, including Punganur. At least 50 people, including police officials, were injured. Disruptions have been reported to public transport, markets, and schools.

Further confrontations between YSRCP and TDP activists are possible in the coming days. Should additional violence occur, parties could call for further strike action.
