Suspected Al-Shabaab militants attacked a group of civilians traveling along the A7 highway near Lango la Shamba in Lamu County around 07:40 Aug. 1. Authorities have confirmed that at least two civilians were killed and ten injured; several people are missing.

Increased security is likely near the impact site along the A7 highway in the coming hours as authorities pursue the militants. Security operations could lead to localized travel disruptions. Similar Al-Shabaab attacks or clashes between Kenyan security forces and Al-Shabaab militants are possible.

Context

Al-Shabaab carries out regular attacks near the porous border with Somalia as well as in coastal areas of Kenya. The incidents are viewed as retaliation for Kenya's participation in a multinational force fighting Al-Shabaab in Somalia since 2011.
