No major impacts reported from magnitude-6.0 earthquake in Malatya Province, Turkiye, at around 10:46 Oct. 16. Damage assessments ongoing.

Critical

Initial assessments have reported no major damage or casualties as a result of a magnitude-6.0 earthquake that occurred in southeastern Malatya Province at around 10:46 Oct. 16. The epicenter of the quake was in Kale District, around 18 km (11 miles) west of Doganyol. Strong shaking was reportedly felt in parts of Malatya, Elazig, Adiyaman, Sanliurfa, and Kahramanmaras provinces, and moderate-to-light shaking was also likely felt throughout parts of east-central Turkiye and into northern Syria. Three buildings, one each in Malatya, Sanliurfa, and Elazig provinces, suffered partial collapse and some other buildings have been evacuated, but no other significant damage or injuries have been reported. Damage assessments are ongoing in the region; it could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Around 30 low-level aftershocks have so far been recorded since the initial temor and further aftershocks are likely over the coming hours and days.

Officials may temporarily shut down transportation infrastructure in the tremor zone to check for damage. Disruptions could occur during shutdowns, but service will likely resume quickly if no damage is found. Utility outages are possible, particularly near the earthquake's epicenter.

Plan accordingly for aftershocks. Vacate multistory buildings if operating in affected areas until authorities confirm their structural integrity. Allow additional time for air and road travel, as aftershocks may prompt brief disruptions. Seek updated information on road conditions before driving in hilly areas in the affected region due to potential landslides.
