Informational

Event

The Saudi Arabia Embassy in Lebanon issued a warning late Aug. 4 to its citizens to avoid areas where armed clashes were occurring. It also reiterated that its citizens should depart Lebanon. Kuwait also issued a warning to its citizens Aug. 5 to avoid areas of 'security disturbances'. The two warnings are likely in connection with the recent violence at Ain el Hilweh. The UK government issued an updated advisory on Aug. 1 warning against all but essential travel to within 500 meters (1,640 feet) of Ain el Hilweh camp.

Clashes between rival armed groups occurred in Ain el-Hilweh camp in Sidon District on July 29 and 30 and late Aug. 2. At least 13 combatants were killed and dozens of people were injured. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) issued a statement Aug. 3 noting that the situation remained volatile.

Further violence is possible over the coming days. Heightened security measures, including road closures and personnel and vehicle checks, and disruptions to transport and business are likely in near the camp over the short term.

Advice

Avoid the area until the situation stabilizes. If operating in the area, exercise increased vigilance and depart the vicinity at the first sign of any security disturbance. Heed the instructions of local security personnel. Maintain contact with your diplomatic representation.
