Liberia: General election scheduled Oct. 10; electoral campaign ongoing
Liberia’s general election scheduled Oct. 10. Campaign activities and related disruptions likely.
Event
Liberia's presidential and legislative elections are scheduled for Oct. 10. The electoral campaign officially began Aug. 5 and will run through Oct. 8. Political gatherings and related disruptions are increasingly likely as the election nears.
An increased security presence, as well as road traffic and business disruptions, are likely in the vicinity of political events and near polling stations on election day. While the 2017 elections passed without significant incidents of violence, clashes with security forces, opposing rival activists, and other forms of electoral violence are possible during the election period. Claims of fraud in the aftermath of the results may also inflame tensions. Officials may impose additional restrictive measures, such as temporary curfews, to prevent violence or in the event of significant unrest.
Context
The primary candidates are incumbent President George Weah, from the Congress for Democratic Change, and Joseph Boakai, from the opposition Unity Party. In the event no candidate is able to gather at least 50 percent of the vote in the first round, there will be a runoff between the two top candidates.
Advice
Remain apprised of the political situation and avoid discussing political topics in public. Allow extra time for travel amid the election period. Avoid political gatherings due to possible clashes and polling stations on election day. If violence occurs nearby, immediately leave the area and seek shelter at a safe nongovernment building. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
