Workers affiliated with the Mexican Alliance for Transport Worker Organization (Alianza Mexicana de Organizacion de Transportistas, AMOTAC) have suspended a nationwide strike originally slated to take place Aug. 29-30. The purpose of the work stoppage was to demand improved road safety, lower operating costs, and protection against extortion; however, labor leaders suspended the action for three months after reaching an agreement with the government to allow time for the National Guard to implement new highway security measures. Nevertheless, union leaders stress that the strike has not been definitively canceled and could take place at the end of the three-month suspension period if the government does not fulfill its end of the accord.
