Informational

Event

Unionized teachers affiliated with the National Coordinator of Education Workers (Coordinadora Nacional de Trabjadores de la Educacion, CNTE) will protest across Mexico City Aug. 31-Sept. 3 as part of a 'National Day of Struggle'. Participants have various demands, including fresh negotiations with the national government and the repeal of certain bills and laws that they claim violate the rights of teachers. A related indefinite work stoppage will occur in Oaxaca State from Sept. 1.

Organizers have not yet released specific details of protests. However, potential demonstration sites in Mexico City include Avenida Paseo de la Reforma, the National Palace, the Secretariat of Home Affairs building (Secretaria de Gobernacion), and the Zocalo (Plaza de la Constitucion). Striking teachers in Oaxaca may also stage protests around government buildings and along key routes.

Thousands of demonstrators are likely to participate in the protests, as seen during previous CNTE gatherings. Heightened security and associated transport and business disruptions are likely around demonstration venues. Clashes between participants and security forces are possible.

Advice

Avoid all protests as a precaution and to minimize travel delays. Heed instructions from authorities. Allow additional time to reach your destination if traveling near demonstration venues Aug. 31-Sept. 3. Leave an area at the first sign of unrest.
