Niger: Activists plan to stage demonstrations nationwide Aug. 3

Activists plan to stage rallies in multiple locations in Niger Aug. 3. Avoid all demonstrations.

Warning

Event

Activists associated with the M62 Movement (Sacred Union for the Safeguarding of the Sovereignty and Dignity of the People) plan to stage a demonstration march from Place Toumo to Place de la Concertation in front of the National Assembly in Niamey starting from 08:00 Aug. 3. Activists also plan to stage similar rallies in Zinder and Agadez although organizers have not provided specific details on protest sites. The purpose of the rallies is to denounce the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) sanctions and demand the immediate withdrawal of French forces, as well as the departure of the French ambassador, from the country. The date of the rally coincides with Niger's independence from France and is an official public holiday.

Activists also call on supporters to continue demonstrating in various neighborhoods of Niamey, including Faycal City, Gamkalle, Saga, Talladje, and Wadata, and for a peaceful congregation of supporters to remain permanently camped at the airport traffic circle located in proximity to Diori Hamani International Airport (NIM) until their demands are met. Activists may organize similar demonstrations in areas across Niger, including Dosso and Maradi. Gatherings may take place with little to no warning in public squares or near prominent government buildings, including foreign consulates or the Presidential Palace.

Heightened security, as well as transport and business disruptions, are likely in affected areas. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations due to potential clashes. If violence breaks out in your area, immediately leave the vicinity and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Plan for transport and business disruptions near protest sites. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities and the respective embassies.
