Nigeria: Further protests possible following Aug. 29 clashes between activists and police in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State
Additional protests possible in Uyo, Nigeria, following Aug. 29 clashes between youth activists and security personnel.
Event
Further civil unrest is possible in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, into at least early September after an Aug. 29 protest in the city devolved into clashes between youth activists and police. Officers responded with tear gas to disperse a crowd of demonstrators when activists affiliated with the Niger Delta Advocacy Movement (NDAM) and Ibom Youth Council (IYC) began marching to the State Government House on Wellington Bassey Way to demand a percentage share in oil production profits.
Increased security and localized transport disruptions are likely in Uyo during any future protests that may materialize. Further confrontations cannot be ruled out.
Advice
Avoid all gatherings as a standard precaution. Plan for possible travel delays. Heed instructions from the security forces. If any violence erupts nearby, immediately depart the area and seek shelter at a non-government building.
