Pakistan: Activists to hold nationwide rallies and other demonstrationsAug. 5

Activists to stage anti-India rallies and marches in Pakistan Aug. 5. Increased security likely; localized disruptions possible.

Warning

Event

Pakistanis nationwide will observe Youm-e-Istehsal (The Day of Exploitation) on Aug. 5; the annual event marks the anniversary of the Indian parliament's 2019 decision to repeal Article 370, effectively removing Jammu and Kashmir's special regional autonomy status in that country and splitting it into two territories.

Various activist groups will hold demonstrations across Pakistan as part of the observance. The Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) plans to protest in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, as well as in Gilgit-Baltistan. In Islamabad, demonstrators will march from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs building along Constitution Avenue to the D-Chowk traffic circle, where a rally will take place; activists in the Pakistani capital could also gather near the High Commission of India.

Related gatherings at locations elsewhere across the country are likely. Potential gathering sites include prominent government buildings, public squares, sports grounds, press clubs, and thoroughfares. Participation will probably vary by location, with larger demonstrations potentially drawing several thousand attendees.

Authorities will almost certainly monitor all gatherings as a precaution and impose increased security measures. Clashes between activists and police are possible. Activists may march along and/or block roadways, prompting localized transport disruptions. Localized business disruptions are possible.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations and potential gathering locations as a precaution. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Allow additional travel time to reach destinations near gathering sites. Plan accordingly for possible localized business disruptions. Carry proper identification documents at all times. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
