Tight security likely in Bannu District, Pakistan, after late Aug. 31 suicide attack leaves at least 9 soldiers dead and 17 others wounded.

Warning

Event

Authorities will almost certainly maintain an increased security presence in the Bannu District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province over the coming days in the wake of a suicide attack that took place in the Jani Khel area late Aug. 31. Preliminary reports indicate that an unidentified assailant on a motorcycle detonated his explosive device while targeting a military convoy; the attack left at least nine soldiers dead and 17 others wounded. No group has as yet claimed responsibility for the incident. According to information released by Inter-Services Public Relations, the armed forces have cordoned off the affected zone and launched an operation to locate and eliminate any militants or other potential attackers that may be in the area.

Strict security measures will probably remain in place for several days as the operation unfolds. Authorities could impose localized travel restrictions or curfews. Additional attacks cannot be ruled out.

Context

There is a high threat of terrorism across Pakistan. In late November 2022, leaders of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) called off a ceasefire with Pakistani security forces. TTP leaders have since encouraged their members to carry out attacks across the nation in retaliation for security operations in several areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province.

A spike in militant attacks is possible over the coming months; the TTP typically targets Pakistani security forces in small-scale bombings, assassinations, and kidnappings in its stronghold areas. Other potential target sites include places of worship, crowded markets, transport hubs, and government and diplomatic buildings. Large attacks involving mass casualties are unlikely in major cities, but cannot be ruled out. Any attacks involving civilian casualties may prompt demonstrations, such as roadblocks, shutdown strikes, and sit-ins. Localized transport and business disruptions, as well as skirmishes, may occur during such demonstrations.

Advice

Exercise a high degree of caution if operating in the impact area. Plan accordingly for localized transport and business disruptions. Carry proper identification documents in the impacted areas; heed all official transport and security advisories.
