The government has declared Aug. 17 as a public holiday in the district; additional holidays are possible. Police have arrested at least 100 people for involvement in targeted violence against residences and worship sites of Christians after two Christian individuals allegedly desecrated the Muslim holy book Aug. 16. Section 144 rules are active until further notice; the curbs prohibit unauthorized public gatherings of over four people and the public carriage of arms, among others.
Authorities have deployed nearly 6,000 security personnel, including paramilitary forces, in affected areas as a precaution. The tightest security is probable near churches.
