South Korea: Authorities enforcing heightened security measures in public places through at least mid-August following online threats /update 1

Police announce increased security in public places in South Korea through at least mid-August. Exercise caution in affected areas.

Warning

Event

Authorities have announced increased security measures in public places nationwide due to a series of online posts threatening to carry out stabbings and bombings; the measures are likely to last through at least mid-August. Bomb and stabbing threats early Aug. 7 have prompted police to conduct search operations at Gimhae International Airport (PUS) and Jeju International Airport (CJU) although reports indicate officials did not discover anything suspicious. Similar threats against multiple locations Aug. 5-6 also prompted increased security measures.

Authorities have deployed 22,098 additional personnel, such as police commandos, riot police, special forces, as well as armored vehicles in major urban areas. Heightened security, such as additional patrols, is likely over the coming weeks in public places such as transport hubs, shopping centers, entertainment districts, and airports. Officials could conduct pedestrian and vehicle checks. Security operations may result in localized transport and business disruptions.

Context

As of Aug. 7, authorities have arrested 59 people in relation to 187 online posts threatening to carry out stabbings and bombings across South Korea. The online threats appear to be actions of lone individuals and there is no indication of group involvement or coordination. The threats come after two mass stabbing incidents occurred in the past weeks. A stabbing incident in Seoul left one dead and three injured July 21, while a copycat stabbing incident in Seognam killed one person and injured 13 others Aug. 3. Authorities have arrested both suspects in the incidents.

Advice
