Civic groups and opposition parties call for demonstrations across South Korea through at least early September. Increased security likely.

Informational

Event

Civic groups and opposition parties have called for demonstrations across South Korea through at least early September. The action is to protest Japan's decision to begin discharging radioactive water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant into the ocean from Aug. 24. The Democratic Party and several civic groups reportedly held separate rallies at the Embassy of Japan Aug. 22. Organizers have announced additional demonstrations at the following locations:

  • Aug. 22: Seoul City Hall, 19:00.

  • Aug. 23: National Assembly, 19:30.

  • Aug. 23: Embassy of Japan. The start time is unclear.

  • Aug. 26: Taepyeongro Building, Seoul, 18:00.

  • Aug. 26: Korean Press Center, 18:00.

Other related demonstrations are probable. Likely demonstration sites in Seoul include the National Assembly, the Embassy of Japan and Seoul City Hall, and Gwanghwamun Square. Potential action sites in other cities include near prominent government buildings, in public squares and city centers, and along roadways in urban centers. Hundreds to thousands of people will probably participate in any upcoming action, with the highest attendance likely in Seoul.

Authorities will likely deploy additional security at announced protest sites. Localized transport disruptions are possible, especially if activists march along or occupy nearby streets. While the protest will likely remain peaceful, minor skirmishes cannot be ruled out.
