Sweden: Authorities likely to maintain increased security in Spanga-Tensta area of Stockholm following clashes at local cultural festival Aug. 3

Authorities likely to maintain increased security in Spanga-Tensta area of Stockholm, Sweden, following clashes at local festival Aug. 3.

Warning

Event

Authorities in Stockholm will likely maintain an increased security presence in the city's Spanga-Tensta area until the conclusion of the Festival Eritrea Scandinavia, an Eritrea-themed cultural festival held annually in the city, after clashes broke out on the festival grounds Aug. 3, injuring more than 50 people. The clashes occurred after demonstrators gathered near the festival venue, the Eggeby Farm in the Jarvafaltet nature reserve, to denounce the Eritrean government. About 1,000 of the protesters stormed the festival after breaking through a police barrier; some reportedly threw rocks, tore down festival tents, and engaged in acts of arson. Police arrested at least 100 people and closed a section of the E18 highway in both directions as individuals rushing to depart the area blocked the thoroughfare. Authorities also remained on-site following the clashes and have opened an investigation into the incident. The festival was scheduled to run through Aug. 6; it was not immediately clear how the Aug. 3 incident would impact the schedule of festival events, if at all.

Transport disruptions are likely in areas subject to heightened security measures. Further clashes cannot be ruled out over the coming days.

Context

Some protesters have claimed that the cultural festival is a vehicle for promoting and raising money for the Eritrean government. The festival has previously invited guests who are allegedly supportive of the ruling regime.

Advice

Avoid the incident site until authorities give the all-clear. If operating in the affected area, leave the vicinity at the first sign of a security disturbance. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent any related disruptions. Adhere to all instructions issued by local officials.
