UK: Unionized rail workers to strike nationwide Sept. 1-2

Unionized rail workers to strike across the UK Sept. 1-2. Rail service disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Unionized rail workers affiliated with the Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen (ASLEF) will observe a strike Sept. 1 and an overtime work ban Sept. 2. The Rail, Maritime, and Transport Union (RMT) will also stage a work stoppage Sept. 2. The industrial action will impact various rail operators, including Avanti West Coast, c2c, Chiltern Railways, Cross Country Trains, East Midlands Railway, Great Western Railway, Greater Anglia, GTR (including Gatwick Express), LNER, Northern, Southeastern, South Western Railway, TransPennine Express, and West Midlands Railway. The walkouts are related to a pay dispute.

The strikes will likely cause significant disruptions to rail services throughout the UK. Increased demand for other forms of transport is probable. Residual disruptions are possible after the work stoppages conclude. Striking workers may protest outside railway stations and other transport hubs.

Advice

Reconfirm rail schedules and travel plans Sept. 1-2. Heed all official directives. Avoid any demonstrations that could materialize as a precaution.
