Unionized workers from a large number of worker groups, including the Inter-union Plenary of Workers – National Convention of Workers (Plenario Intersindical de Trabajadores – Convención Nacional de Trabajadores, PIT-CNT), as well as unions for education, municipal, financial, transport, and health workers, are planning to strike and stage protests Aug. 22 to demand greater government accountability and wage increases. PIT-CNT will hold a protest march in Montevideo from the University of the Republic to the Ministry of the Economy and Finance 09:00-13:00.
Further demonstrations are likely, particularly in Montevideo. Heightened security, as well as localized transit and business disruptions, are likely near demonstration sites. Disruptions to mass transit, schools, municipal services, and medical appointments are also likely, although emergency services are likely to continue operating.
