Yemen: Protesters burn tires and obstruct roads in multiple parts of Aden Governorate late Aug. 22 to denounce power outages

Activists burn tires, obstruct roads in Aden, Yemen, late Aug. 22 to denounce power outages; security forces reportedly shoot at protesters.

Warning

Event

Heightened security is likely in parts of Aden Governorate over the coming hours after protesters assembled in several districts late Aug. 22 to denounce power outages amid prevailing high temperatures. Demonstrators reportedly gathered in Al-Mansurah, Sheikh Othman, and Khormaksar, with some burning tires and obstructing road traffic. Unconfirmed reports suggest that security forces affiliated with the Southern Transitional Council (STC) fired live ammunition at protesters in Khormaksar in an attempt to forcibly disperse them, injuring at least two people.

Power outages will likely continue to impact parts of Aden Governorate over the short term. Related demonstrations cannot be ruled out in the Aden area or any other urban areas in the country experiencing power outages over the coming days. Transport and business disruptions are possible in areas subject to protest activity. Security forces may attempt to forcibly disperse additional demonstrators in the affected areas, including with live ammunition.

Advice

Avoid areas affected by protest activity until the situation stabilizes. If violence breaks out in your area, take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent protest sites and any related disruptions. Adhere to all instructions issued by local officials and your home government.
