Demonstrations commemorating 1973 military coup and consequent disruptions to transport and business likely across Chile through Sept. 11.

Warning

Event

Demonstrations in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 1973, military coup are likely nationwide through Sept. 11. The rallies will probably cause significant transport and business disruptions, with police deploying to monitor all large gatherings. Clashes between demonstrators and police are possible, especially at demonstrations that run into the nighttime hours.

While related gatherings are likely to begin during the evening of Sept. 8 and continue through the Sept. 9-10 weekend, the largest demonstrations will likely take place Sept. 11, with Santiago seeing the most gatherings. Within Santiago, demonstrators are most likely to gather in Plaza Baquedano, which is also known as Plaza Italia and frequently called Plaza de la Dignidad by activists and protest organizers. Such demonstrations are likely to cause significant transport disruptions on Avenida Libertador General Bernardo O'Higgins, also known as Alameda, a major thoroughfare through the city. Demonstrations are also likely at the National Stadium, the Plaza Los Heroes, and the La Moneda presidential palace. Additional smaller demonstrations are likely throughout the city.

Elsewhere in the country, demonstrations are most likely in major cities, such as Antofagasta, Arica, Concepcion, Iquique, Talca, Talcahuano, Temuco, Valparaiso, and Vina del Mar. Demonstrators are most likely to gather in major plazas, near government buildings, and on major roads.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations as a precaution, especially those that take place after dark. If violence occurs, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Allow for additional transport time throughout Chile. Reconfirm business appointments. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
