Cyprus: Activists plan immigration-related protests in central Limassol Sept. 1 and 2.

Activists plan anti- and pro-immigration protests in Limassol, Cyprus, Sept. 1 and 2. Heightened security is likely.

Warning

Event

Anti-immigrant and pro-immigrant activists are planning separate protests in Limassol Sept. 1 and 2, respectively. These demonstrations come in the wake of anti-immigration protests in Chloraka that resulted in several days of clashes between anti-immigrant groups and immigrants, leading to 21 arrests. The anti-immigration protest will take place at Molos at 20:00 Sept. 1. A demonstration denouncing anti-immigrant violence will take place at Enaerios at 19:00 Sept. 2. It is unclear how many participants may attend the demonstrations.

Authorities have mobilized an additional 150 anti-riot police in an attempt to prevent the type of violence seen in Chloraka. Localized transport disruptions are likely near demonstration sites. Low-level clashes between protestors, counterdemonstrators, and police cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Avoid the protest areas as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near the affected areas. Immediately depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement personnel.
