Cyprus: Increased security likely in Limassol following clashes at immigration-related protest in central Limassol Sept. 1 /update 1
Tight security likely in Limassol, Cyprus, after clashes at ant- immigration protest, Sept 1; counter demonstration scheduled Sept. 2.
Event
Increased security is likely in central Limassol through late Sept. 2 after anti-immigrant demonstrators clashed with police and attacked news crews and bystanders the evening of Sept. 1. Unruly demonstrators also reportedly damaged a hotel, smashed shop windows and attacked foreigners; acts of arson were also reported.
Anti-immigrant and pro-immigrant activists previously planned separate protests in Limassol on Sept. 1 and 2, respectively. These demonstrations come in the wake of anti-immigration protests in Chloraka that resulted in several days of clashes between anti-immigrant groups and immigrants, leading to 21 arrests. The anti-immigration protest began at Molos at 20:00 on Sept. 1. A demonstration denouncing anti-immigrant violence will take place at Enaerios at 19:00 on Sept. 2. It is unclear how many participants may attend the demonstrations.
Authorities previously mobilized an additional 150 anti-riot police to prevent the violence seen in Chloraka and may employ additional forces in the wake of Sept. 1's unrest. Localized transport disruptions are likely near demonstration sites. Low-level clashes between protestors, counterdemonstrators, and police cannot be ruled out.
Advice
Avoid the protest areas as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near the affected areas. Immediately depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement personnel.
